Will Switching From 5th Wheel Pin Box To Gen Y Nomad Gooseneck Adapter Affect Turn Clearance?

Updated 12/22/2025 | Published 12/03/2025

Question:

I’ve got a short-bed 2020 Ram 2500 and I’m running a Lippert 1716 box right now. If I switch to the Gen-Y Nomad GY57ND, will I lose any turning clearance?

Greg, with your 1716 pin box, the Gen-Y Nomad # GY57ND is the correct model, and it maintains essentially the same front-cap-to-ball distance as your factory box - meaning no added turning clearance, but also no reduction. Gen-Y lists it as offering no additional clearance, so your turning radius should stay just about identical to what you have now.

The Nomad is designed to place the gooseneck coupler at the proper height to replicate a standard pin box connection, so it won’t change your ride height or nose attitude when installed correctly. That’s one of the nice things about this setup - the geometry stays familiar even though the connection style changes.

Since you're converting to a gooseneck system, don’t forget to add the Gen-Y safety chain kit # GY49GR to stay compliant.

Greg, if you want to share a photo of your current bed-rail and cab clearance, I can help confirm everything looks good for your Ram short bed.

I’ve got a 2021 Cougar 30RLS. Same deal? or did Keystone change anything between those years?

@Nancy Hey Nancy. The 30RLS is typically the same story. Most of those still came with a Lippert 1621, but I’d double-check the tag just to be safe. If it’s 1621, 1116, or 1716, the # GY57ND will bolt right on. If you want to post the pin box number here, I can confirm it for you. If you don't see a sticker, check out the link I've attached here.
