Will Blue Ox Patriot Work with Tow Vehicle Exhaust Brake

Updated 09/29/2025 | Published 09/08/2025

Question:

Good morning, Driving a Diesel Pusher Class A and towing a dingy. Looking to purchase the Blue Ox Patriot Braking system. The exhaust brake on the motorhome is pretty agressive and slows the unit down nicely...Will or does the Patriot system sense that slow down and start to apply the towed dingys brakes. If it does, how do you prevent the Patriot from applying the brakes on the dingy when you are just really coasting down a hill or to a intersection? Is it just sensitivity setting??

Hey Jeff, the Blue Ox Patriot part # BLU37TR only uses an inertia sensor to determine when you are applying the brakes in the tow vehicle to determine how much braking pressure is required from the unit. It will sense the exhaust brake if it's slowing the tow vehicle to a significant degree and will apply the brakes. It would be a sensitivity setting if you wanted to make that happen more or less aggressively.

Hey Jeff, did adjusting the sensitivity setting on the Blue Ox Patriot help with the braking when coasting down a hill or to an intersection? I'm curious to know how it worked out for you, as it could help others with similar setups.
