What Hitch Weighs the Least for My 2025 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Plug-In?

Updated 07/18/2025 | Published 07/02/2025

Question:

2025 Toyota Rav4 plug-in hybrid. Looking for towing hitch with two considerations: 1 possibility to remove hitch assembly when not needed, and 2 less heavy weight so not impact to elec. motive power efficiency. Thinking Eco-hitch class 3 or Curt class 2. Any advice? If I remove between infrequent tow needs, ease to re-install a significant factor. If I go with just keep on, weight of hitch assembly biggest factor. Presumably class 2 assembly is lighter in weight hanging from rear of car, yes?

Hello David,

Congrats on the new RAV4!! What is your new favorite feature?

The Curt hitch # C66KR will not work for your car because it is the Plug-in Hybrid, you had 2025 Toyota RAV4 put in the fit guide, but you have the PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle).

Your best option would be the Hidden Hitch by Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - 2" # DT97YR since the receiver can be removed when not in use. This hitch weighs 47 pounds, when I researched how it will affect the power efficiency it states: the impact on the vehicle's power efficiency and range when not towing will likely be very minimal, if even noticeable at all.

If you wanted something lighter, I would go with the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # C77MJ as it only 31 pounds. I looked up the Class II and it actually weighs 2 more pounds than the class 3, and you will want the 2" receiver as it is the more common size.

What are you looking to use the hitch for?

Kate, Thank you for your research, mentioned options and reply. You give good options with rationale. Now, I just gotta make a choice, commit, get hitch chosen and install. Standby.
