Hey Tom, thanks for the information! The best brake controller for your 2021 Ford Explorer is the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller item # RED52VR or the item # RED96CR if your truck has the factory tow package. This is a proportional brake controller that activates your trailer's brakes when your Explorer decelerates.
The reason the Tow-Pro Liberty is the best option is because of its unique installation method where the only visible portion is the control knob that's about the size of a nickel. The main unit is hidden away inside your dash to be completely out of the way and out of sight.
The Redarc has a 3-Axis accelerometer that measures deceleration in all directions for precise braking and smooth, uniform stopping action. It automatically adjusts the trailer's braking based on deceleration of your vehicle.
Did your Explorer come with the factory towing package? This would include a 4-way or 7-way connector installed from the factory. If your answers yes, you'll definitely want item # RED96CR, which includes a plug and play harness. You'll find the correct plug on your vehicle under the dash by the steering column.
