Adding Longer Crossbars to Malone EcoLight Trailer

Updated 07/09/2025 | Published 06/28/2025

Question:

Would this kit be a good choice to convert my Malone EcoLight single trailer to a double kayak trailer? I transport a 12’ long, 41” wide kayak like it’s a boat on my EcoLight. Could I use this kit and my current bunks placed offset on the crossbars to alsotransport a shorter, thinner kayak?

Hey Roman! The Malone Crossbar Conversion Kit # MPG475 is designed to be added to a utility trailer. You can probably get this work with your EcoLight # MAL53FR but it isn't necessary. What you can do instead is trade out your existing 58" crossbars with the 78" # MPG4001. This will save you some money and give you the extra space for an additional kayak on the trailer. You can offset your current bunks like you said and add a smaller kayak with another carrier like # MAL98FR.

What kind of kayaks do you have?

I have a Nucanoe Frontier 12 that I currently trailer with the EcoLight on bunks. My other kayak is a Crescent Smallie (33” wide and 10.5’ long). Will the Malone FoldAway j-rack that you linked mount onto the trailer?

@Roman those look nice! Yes, the Malone FoldAway # MAL98FR will fit on those crossbars. It has a 75 lb capacity and it looks like your Crescent Smallie is 65 lbs so that will work well.

@RobinH Thanks for your insights and cost-saving suggestion. It’s greatly appreciated. I will be placing an order for those products. Regarding the Malone j-racks you linked—there will be times when I will only be transporting the Crescent kayak and would like the option to rooftop the boat. Is there a roof crossbar that you would recommend for a 2021 Ford Bronco Sport Badlands

@Roman sure thing. If it is a rack you only plan to throw on while transporting the kayak I'd get the Inno Square Bar Roof Rack # IN58YV. If you plan to keep it on all the time I recommend the Yakima # Y42GD. The Yakima will be much quieter and get better gas mileage.
