Does Using Gen-Y Stacked Receiver as Hitch Adapter Reduce Tongue Weight Capacity

Updated 09/29/2025 | Published 05/05/2025

Question:

Does this mean you can insert any brand or length of ball mount (example: Ball Mount 3/4" Rise or 2" Drop - 12-5/8" Long - Part Number: D-26) into the Gen Y hitch and essentially use it like an extender without a reduction in tongue weight or gross trailer weight?

Hey Matt, yes you can put a ball mount into the Gen-Y Shank part # 325-GH-304 that you referenced like the # D-26 and according to Gen-Y this will not reduce the hitch's tongue weight capacity like a standard hitch adapter would. The # D-26 is a longer ball mount though so I would still recommend using your best judgment and if you are close to your tongue weight capacity maybe consider something different.

Hey Matt, did you decide to use the longer ball mount with your Gen-Y hitch, or did you opt for something else? I'm curious because your experience could help others make a confident choice when using different ball mounts.

@JamesonC I actually used the curt C79NR dual ball drop hitch. It's about the same length. Any hitch would work. My original question was really about the weight capacities using the GEN-Y as an extender. With my truck camper mounted on the truck, I needed a few more inches to keep the trailer away from it. The GEN-Y is heavy and probably overkill, but it's what I had laying around and I didn't have to worry about reducing capacity with a traditional extender.
