Replacement Converter for 2022 Cougar 22RBS

Updated 09/29/2025 | Published 04/28/2025

Question:

I need to replace my WFCO converter and am looking at the PD9300 series from Progressive Dynamics. My trailer is a 30 amp trailer 2022 Cougar 22RBS. I believe the WFCO in place is a 50 amp converter, but Im not sure if that is overkill. Im wondering if the PD49RR, 30amp, converter would be perfectly fine or if I need to get a larger unit? Im planning to run 2 100ah lithium batteries in parallel, and my unit does have a Victron MPPT 75 solar setup with one 200watt panel.

Hey Lars, I would go with a higher rated Progressive Dynamics converter like the # PD79RR which is rated for 60 amps because while your RV has 30 amp power that's on the AC power side of things and this converter takes that AC and converts it to DC which the amperage changes quite a bit for that. That is why you wouldn't want to match your 30 amp power with a 30 amp converter.

Hey Lars, did you decide to go with the 60 amp converter for your Cougar? I'm curious to know how it worked out for you, as it could help others in a similar situation.

@JamesonC thanks for the follow up. We actually ended up sending the converter to WFCO who did a firmware upgrade and also put a jumper in place to keep it in lithium mode. That worked good and we never upgraded the whole converter. Since then we've actually swapped our camper to a 2026 Cougar 23MLE which has a 50 amp setup. The WFCO converter/charger in this new trailer has auto detected the lithium batteries correctly. So hopefully WFCO has fixed that issue moving forward. Appreciate the help and advice!
