Wire Gauge for Progressive Dynamics 9300 Series RV Converter Charger

Updated 11/05/2024 | Published 11/04/2024

Question:

I have a 21 Cougar 1/2 Ton. Currently it has a WF 9855 CONVERTER. The cables from converter to power center ar 6 gauge. I want to upgrade to a Progressive Dynamics. Can the existing 6 gauge, approx 5 ft. in length handle the P.D. 80 amp converter?

Hi John; if you want to use the # PD89RR the 6 gauge won't be enough for the 80 amp output. You will need to switch to 4 gauge copper or 2 gauge aluminum wire.

Will that also require a 20 amp breaker? Currently it's 15amp. I'm trying to determine if the bigger converter is worth the effort. How much quicker would a 80amp converter charge over a 60amp?

@John you won't have to change anything with the breakers. We don't have a good way to tell how much faster it will charge since there are a lot of factors. Your batteries may only be able to accept a certain amount of amperage at a time so that could be a limiting factor too. Take a look at your batteries and it might be listed. Also, consider any other 12V loads you have. You can benefit from a larger converter if you have a lot of other 12V loads on top of the battery charging.
