Can A Dual Hitch Adapter Be Used In Conjunction With A Hitch Extender For Tow Bar?

Updated 04/16/2025 | Published 04/13/2025

Question:

Can a hitch extender, like RM-071 or RM-071-75, be used in conjunction with a dual hitch receiver, like RM-077-4, when using the extender in the lower receiver of the dual hitch to flat tow a vehicle behind a motor home? The owners manual for the hitch extender states the following: Do not use more than one hitch receiver extension at any given time, for any towing application. The extensions are not designed to be linked to- gether. Multiple extensions will buckle or separate when towing, causing the towing system to fail. Significant property damage, personal injury or even death can result if multiple extensions are used. I am not sure if the dual hitch receiver counts as an extension. I am trying to add more space between a bike rack on the back of a motor home and the vehicle being towed behind the motorhome by using a dual hitch receiver RM-077-4 and an extension RM-071 for the tow bar. I want to make sure this would be safe. Thanks!

Hello Steve, good question. The dual hitch adapter like the Roadmaster # RM-077-4 does count as an extension since is extends the pin hole connection out 10". So, it would not be ok to use a dual hitch adapter with another extension. What the owners manual says is true it would be unstable and highly dangerous.
