Alternative Solution for Towing a Casita Trailer with a 2024 Honda Ridgeline

Updated 10/22/2025 | Published 04/02/2025

Question:

Hi, Im in the process of purchasing a 17 Casita fiberglass travel trailer. The tongue weight should be around 400 and Ill tow it with a 2024 AWD Honda Ridgeline Black Edition which claims a 5000 tow capacity and 500 tongue cap. The Honda literature somewhat discourages weight distribution hitches unibody and they have some kind of electronic traction control. I want at least some sway protection, and the ability to back the trailer without unhitching. The Honda/Casita community seems very divided in their opinions on the Andersen WD hitch but it appear it is used a lot while others claim they dont work with Honda Ridgelines. Can you make any suggestions on hitch choices? Thank you.

Hey Rob, thanks for reaching out!

The unibody definitely can be a problem, especially when the owner's manual discourages it. I get the concept behind the Anderson WD hitch, but frankly I'm a little skeptical of it myself, so I have some alternative recommendations for you.

For sway control I recommend checking out the Tuson Electric Sway Control # 335TSC-1000 because it uses your trailer brakes to help keep the trailer in line. Then for some help with a smoother ride I recommend pairing the Gen-Y Phantom X # GY37JV with the Curt 2" RockerBall # CU46FR. It's a little different setup, but I've heard great things about RockerBall system!

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hey Rob, how did the setup with the Tuson sway control and the Gen-Y Phantom X work out for your Casita and Ridgeline? Your results could really help others towing similar lightweight trailers with unibody vehicles. Sharing what you found might guide others facing the same decision.
