Trailer Hitch Option For 2005 Ram 2500 Service Truck

Updated 10/27/2025 | Published 03/24/2025

Question:

Recently purchased a service truck 2005 dodge Ram 2500. It does not have a hitch currently, just a ball in the bumper. I asked local shop about installing a quick hitch the kind you bolt into frame underneath and they said in these utility trucks, oftentimes the bumper is lower than the frame. So, they cant install those. I am finding bolt on hitches that just bolt below the bumper but they only carry 5000 lbs. Do I have any other options?

Hello Jessica, thanks for reaching out. It is tricky installing a hitch on these service body trucks like you said. The best option for this would be to take a universal hitch like the Curt Class 5 Universal Weld-on Hitch # C99CR. It can fit frames up to 44" wide and has 18" tall brackets. You would just need to find a welder who can fabricate it to fit. Just please confirm the frame width is 44" or less. When properly installed, this hitch has a 16,000 lb capacity but you will want to make sure you do not exceed the towing capacity of your truck.

Hey Jessica, did you get a chance to check your frame width and see if the universal weld-on hitch worked for your Ram service truck? Your results could really help others trying to tow with a similar setup.
