Can these tracks be installed on the actual top of the roof of a Toyota Tacoma not the camper shell?

Hi Sofia!
Yakima Tracks for Roof Racks can definitely be installed on the roof of your Tacoma. Well, as long as you have over 54" of roof to work with, so I do recommend measuring your roof to make sure you have enough room.
The Yakima 54" Tracks for Roof Racks # Y26RR is intended for fiberglass though, so you would also need to grab the PlusNut Hardware Kit for Yakima Roof Rack Tracks - 42" or 54" # Y8880039 for it to be mounted (this creates a better seal on metal surfaces). The Yakima 54" Tracks for Roof Racks # Y01127 comes with these and is also less expensive than adding on the PlusNut kit, so I would probably go with it instead.
Now if you don't have 54" to work with, we do have the Yakima 42" Tracks for Roof Racks # Y01126 as well. This also includes the PlusNut kit, so it is designed for the metal roof and no other parts will be needed for the install.
Do you already have a track mounted roof rack set up? And what are you wanting to carry?

Sofia... I've got a 07 Tacoma double cab Offroad. Installed the Yakima tracks on bed canopy for a aftermarket roof rack. Also installed a aftermarket roof rack on top of the cab useing the mounting holes under the oem rubber track covers. Have you considered just going with the Toyota roof rack /cross bars that mount into the bolt locations under the rubber track cover?
