Adapter for 1-1/4 Inch Hitch to 2 Inch Receiver with Rise for a 2006 Acura TSX and Bike Rack

Published 06/13/2014

Question:

Id like to put a 2inch adapter and riser on my 1 1/4inch class I hidden hitch brand hitch for my 2006 Acura TSX. I realize there are two issues the connection of class II adapter to a class I receiver and if the adapter will clear the bumper on my car. Can you advise if either of these will work? Im using it for a 2-bike platform style 2inch hitch mount bike rack. - MT70355 MaxxTow Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter says its for class II hitches only -Curt Dual 2inch Receiver Tube Adapter, 8inch Extension

When we installed Hidden Hitch trailer hitch # 60831 on a 2006 Acura TSX it measured 4 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to clear the rear bumper. The Curt adapter # D-192 will not fit because it only fits in 2 inch trailer hitch receiver openings. And the MaxxTow MT70355 will not fit since it was for Class II hitches.

That leaves Brophy adapter # HT5R. It will fit a Class I hitch but the issue with it is that the back of the 2 inch receiver does not come out far enough to clear that 4 inches from the hitch pin hole to the bumper on your TSX. However, do to the angle of the rear fascia and the fact that the furthest out part of the bumper would be above the 2 inch receiver on the adapter, it should work.

Using the adapter is going to reduce the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent. The means the tongue weight capacity of your hitch will be only 100 pounds. The combined weight of the bike rack and bikes cannot exceed 100 pounds. You are also limited to 2 bikes at most on a Class I hitch regardless of whether you are using an adapter or not.

The safest option is to use a rack that is compatible with the Class I hitch such as the Swagman Trailhead, # S63360. I have linked a video review of this rack for you.
