2025 4Runner with moonroof. Does the cargo box lock to the cross bars or rails? Are these weather resistant?

Congrats on the 2025 4Runner! What is your favorite new feature?

The Thule Motion 3 Rooftop Cargo Box - 21 cu ft - Black Glossy # TH59PN would need to be installed on crossbars not you factory raised rails (please see attached image). If you do no have a roof rack system already, the Thule WingBar Evo Roof Rack for Raised Rails - Aluminum - Black - Qty 2 # TH52ZA would be an excellent fit for your 4Runner.

I guess you could say it locks to the bars. What I mean by that is that it uses PowerClick quick-mount clamps, which securely attach to crossbars. These clamps ensure a strong hold and prevent movement while driving. The PowerClick quick-mount clamps are located inside the cargo box, and when the lid is closed it automatically locks. I attached an image of the clamp inside the cargo box, and the outside handle to open so you can see where the lock is located.

As for weather resistance, the Thule Motion cargo box is designed to be highly resistant to rain and snow. It features tight-sealing edges and a reinforced lid, helping keep moisture out. However, like most cargo boxes, it is not 100% waterproof. In heavy rain a small amount of water could seep in, so just make sure that whatever you store inside is waterproof or you could put your items inside a waterproof bag.

Whether you can use the moonroof on your 2025 4Runner with a Thule Motion cargo box depends on clearance. The box mounts to the crossbars, and its low profile may interfere with the moonroof’s ability to slide open. So you might not be able to use the moonroof while the cargo box is attached.
