Wiring to Install 4-Way to 7-Way Trailer Connector Adapter

Updated 10/30/2025 | Published 02/18/2025

Question:

I bought the 4 pin to 7 flat adapter for my 2016 Jeep renegade. The jeep has a 12v battery and I would like to know what type of wire and fuse I need to run. Will a 12 gauge wire work fine? And what type of fuse will work. I’m pulling a small pop up camper. Thank you

Hey Mark! I'm assuming you plan on adding a brake controller as well, is that correct? Since you already have the adapter you can use the Wiring Kit for 2, 4, 6, and 8 Brake Electric Trailer Brake Controllers # 5506.

This comes with 10-2 Duplex wire, circuit breakers, ring terminals, and butt connectors to complete the installation just like our Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7 you were looking at. If you're only planning to add 12V power you can use the # 10-1-1 for wire and the 30 amp # PK54230 for a breaker. If you need anything else don't hesitate to reach out in the comments below.

Hey Mark, how did things go with the wiring on your Jeep Renegade and the pop-up camper? Did the 10-gauge wire and 30-amp breaker setup give you the power you needed? Your update could make it easier for the next person working on a similar trailer connection.
