Question:
Good evening! I’ll preface this with I know very little about trailer brakes, but am looking to install a trailer brake controller on my 98 Subaru Forester as I’m hoping to purchase a travel trailer in the near future. Do you have any recommendations? I’m looking for something mid-shelf. The vehicle is 27 years old. So I’m not looking break the bank or invest in anything too fancy. Thanks in advance.

Hey Travis, the best brake controller solution we have for what you mentioned wanting is the Tekonsha Brake EVN part # TK28BR as this is one of the better performing controllers that is also at a much better price. There are a lot cheaper options out there but this one works really well and doesn't break the bank.
To install it you'll first need a 4-way trailer wiring kit installed like the part # 118461 which is confirmed fit for your 1998 Subaru Forester and then to convert to a 7-way and install a brake controller you'd want the part # ETBC7 which comes with everything for that.
If you have any other questions about the install or the brake controller just let me know. The one I recommended is proportional which means it senses how hard you apply the vehicle brakes and applies the trailer brakes with the same intensity.

Hey Travis, how did things go with the Tekonsha Brake-EVN on your Forester? Did the wiring setup with the 4-way and 7-way kits go smoothly? Your update could make it easier for others adding a brake controller to an older vehicle.
