Comparing Load Range C And D Tires For A 2012 Lance 2185 Travel Trailer

Updated 11/17/2025 | Published 12/29/2024

Question:

Looking for a safe and reliable travel trailer tire for my family. I have 2012 Lance 2185 travel trailer. The sticker on the trailer says ST205/75R14C. I have been looking at your website for the same tire but D rated. Is it worth going to a D rated to a stock C ? Thanks for your input

Hey Eric,

It's pretty normal to go up a load range if you're feeling like the trailer is being overloaded since tire wear and capacity go hand in hand. It's ok to have some extra capacity when it comes to the wheels, however, going with something too high of a capacity won't allow for enough compression of the tires and can cause uneven wear and handling issues.

The GVWR of your trailer is 6,000lbs and a load range D tire would give you roughly 2,200lbs of capacity, which multiplied by four would equal 8,800lbs of capacity. Load range C would give you roughly 1,760lbs per tire equaling 7,040lbs of total capacity so in this case I'd personally would go with load range C since it's more than enough for your trailer. The tongue weight of the trailer also factors in here since your tow vehicle is picking up about 10-15% of the load as well.

The Taskmaster Provider ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range C # TR20514 would be a great option to replace your current tires without being too overrated to avoid wear and handling issues.

Hey Eric, how did the Provider ST205/75R14 tires work out on your Lance 2185? Did the ride and wear seem better with the load range C setup? Your feedback could really help others choosing between C and D rated tires.
