Can A 3,500 lb Axle Leaf Spring Be Replaced With A 4,000 lb Axle Spring?
Updated 11/17/2025 | Published 12/17/2024 >
Question:
I need to replace my leaf springs on my travel trailer. I have tandem 3500 lb axels. Would it hurt anything to go to springs for 4000 lb axels? I know it wont change my specs, its just more a peace of mind thing.

Hey William, thanks for reaching out. As long as the new leaf springs are the correct length, it is not going to hurt anything to go with a slightly higher rated spring. A higher rated spring will flex a bit less so the ride might be a bit more stiff which could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on the current ride quality. We just need to be sure the new springs will fit into your suspension so what I would do is jack up one side of the trailer and measure the springs when not under a load. If you can give me the eye-to-eye measurement of your springs I am happy to look into it and see if we have a good replacement option for you.

Hey William, did you get a chance to measure the eye-to-eye length of your trailer’s leaf springs? Once you have that measurement, I can help confirm which replacement will fit best. Let me know what you find so we can narrow it down.
