How Can I Get More Durable, Effective Braking For My Enclosed Trailer?

Updated 12/22/2025 | Published 10/19/2024

Question:

I have a question. Ive searched around your QandA and within your products for different kits, but Im not sure that I see the solution Im looking for, though Im not really sure what Im looking for at this point. My situation is that I have a 10 enclosed trailer with a TK Dexter compatible 3500lb axle that has electric brakes. My issue is that since I put a lot of miles on this trailer, Ive found electric brakes arent a viable solution since theres so many wear points in them magnets, drums, etc. I dont want to have to deal with constant replacement and maintenance of anything but brake pads or shoes, so Im seeking a more viable option. What are your recommendations for possibly converting my axle to a more durable braking system?

Hello Bob, thanks for reaching out. If you are unhappy with the performance of the drum brakes, adding disc brakes will be a way to get a more effective, durable braking system. In order to switch over you will need a disc brake kit, brake line kit, and hydraulic brake actuator. This can be either a surge brake actuator, or electric over hydraulic. Here is what I recommend:

- Kodiak Disc Brakes - 10" Hub/Rotor - 5 on 4-1/2 - Dacromet/KodaGuard - 3,500 lbs - E-Z Lube # KOD59FR

- Kodiak Hydraulic Brake Line Kit - Single Axle - 15' # 15SI-BLKIT

For the actuator, if you want to go with a surge actuator, I recommend the Demco # DM72VR which bolts to a 3" tongue. If you want to go electric over hydraulic, use the Hydrastar Vented Marine Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator # HS481-8067. This is a full install kit for the actuator, so you get everything you need other than the disc brake kit and brake lines.

The article I linked below goes over the process of adding disc brakes in more detail. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions.

Hey Bob, how did the switch to the disc brake setup work out on your 10' trailer? Your update could make it easier for others looking to move away from electric drum brakes.
