Are There Weight Distribution Systems That Do Not Allow Backing Up?

Updated 10/17/2024 | Published 10/13/2024

Question:

I am deciding between 2 weight distribution hitches for my small horse trailer. One says “backing up compatible” and the more expensive one doesn’t mention that. I used a weight distribution hitch years ago and don’t remember not being compatible with reversing. Is there a concern?

Hello Valerie, thanks for reaching out. There are certain less expensive weight distribution hitches that do not allow backing up. This can be a huge inconvenience, so I generally try to stay away from recommending anything like that.

I see that you were looking at the Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control # BLU66UR. This system will allow backing up, so there are no concerns there. Blue Ox makes a very solid WD hitch, and they come highly recommended. This # BLU66UR will work on trailers with a tongue weight between 200 and 600 lbs, so you will want to make sure your trailer falls within this range.

I actually have the tongue weight on the trailer- it is 7,000 GW, 1050 TW according to the sticker on the trailer. So, I need a bigger hitch than the one I looked at, but I can not find one with a 2 inch ball. Can you suggest a weight distribution hitch with a 2 inch ball? Thank you so much for the help. Years ago my old trailer came with the hitch already set.

@ValerieH All of the WD hitches we offer come with a 2-5/16" ball. What I recommend is the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37120ET which will be good for the tongue weight of your trailer. Then you can buy a 2" ball separately. We offer a 2" ball that can be used with this, the Curt hitch ball # A-90. This ball is rated for 10,000 lbs which is the maximum weight rating for a 2" hitch ball.
