Looking For 1/2" - 20 Wheel Studs For Utility Trailer

Updated 12/22/2025 | Published 10/12/2024

Question:

Hi - Im rebuilding a sled trailer into a utility trailer and it has hubs threaded for 1/2 x 13 lug bolts left thread on the left side. I want to convert to standard 1/2 x 20 right threaded studs on both sides just for ease of maintaining. The hubs themselves are in good condition and turn smoothly, so I figured I would press in new studs. Can you suggest an appropriate stud and do you think I could install myself? Thanks!

Hey Jim, thanks for reaching out. The left hand thread style lugs are basically obsolete so converting to the 1/2" - 20 right hand thread style lugs will be the way to go. You will want to take a closed look at the size of the current studs to make sure you get the right thing.

For example, the Kodiak Wheel Bolt # K12WB169 is 1-11/16" long and has a 5.45" knurl diameter. You will want to check and make sure this is appropriate for your hub. If you need a different size just let me know and I am happy to look into it. Or you can use the link below to see our full selection of 1/2" wheel studs.

This is not too hard to do by yourself if you have the right tool and a little know-how. A press would make things a lot easier, but if you can hammer the old studs out you should be able to hammer the new ones in. Use a wood block and a hammer or mallet to get them started. Then you should be able to thread on the nut and crank that down until the studs are seated all the way.

Hey Jim, how did things go with converting your trailer hubs to the 1/2-20 right-hand studs? Were you able to find a stud size that fit your hubs well? Your results could really help others tackling the same upgrade.
