Dimensions Of Cotter Pin 165649 For EZ-Lube Axle

Updated 01/12/2026 | Published 09/04/2024

Question:

What is the proper diameter for the cotter pin in an E-Z-lube spindle? I used a standard 1/8 inch and what I find is that all the grease that I pump in comes out thru the cotter pin gaps. I assume there is a better fit pin that will plug the hole a bit better but I am not sure what it would be.

Hello Andrew. I had a cotter pin for an ez-lube spindle part # 165649 laying here on my desk so I grabbed a micrometer to measure. With both halves of the pin pressed together is measures 0.11". Each half of the pin is like 0.05". I edited a picture to help illustrate.

When you grease the spindle you are forcing grease around the pin. What you can do is remove the pin and back the castle nut off to cover the hole, or you can even plug it by hand when you add grease. I have heard of people using alternatives to a cotter pin to help plug the hole. If you can find a pin that is a better fit than by all means use it. I even heard one of our customers say he used a 5/32" tig welding stick and it was a perfect tight fit. I am not quite sure that I would recommend doing that, but if you can find a strong enough material that is a better fit then go for it. Let me know if there is anything else I can do.

Hey Andrew, how did things go after trying the cotter pin size the teammate measured for the E-Z Lube spindle? Did adjusting the fit or covering the hole help keep the grease from leaking out? Your update could make it easier for others dealing with the same issue.
