Recommended Trailer Wiring And Brake Controller For A 2012 BMW X5 50i

Updated 01/27/2026 | Published 08/25/2024

Question:

I have a 2012 BMW X5 50i. It now has a trailer hitch on it that I installed. I want to pull a dual axle enclosed with brakes. Currently has no wiring for a trailer. Do you make a full kit that is the round 7 pin plug?

Hi Gregory,

There isn't an all-in-one kit for your 2012 BMW X5 50i but we do have you need. You'll first need to install a 4-pole wire harness like the Curt # C59236. From there you can install our 7-way installation kit # ETBC7. I recommend picking up a no-drill bracket # 18136 and facing it straight down when mounting the 7-way because of how the hitch sits on this vehicle.

You'll also need a brake controller to actuate the brake assemblies on the trailer. The Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195 is known to be one of the best brake controllers on the market and would great choice for your setup. It has four profiles so that you can label the trailers you pull and save your individual settings for each trailer.

Hey Gregory, how did the wiring setup go on your BMW X5 with the 4-pole harness and 7-way kit? Your update could make it easier for the next person adding trailer wiring to a similar vehicle.
