Troubleshooting B&W Companion Slider Function Difficulty Releasing

Updated 02/03/2026 | Published 07/27/2024

Question:

My BandW Companion Slider can be very difficult to release. I can raise and lower the release easily mist of the time, very easily but sometimes it is very stiff. I often have to chalk and hold the trailer brakes to get the hitch to slide back. I live on a slight grade so Im often going up hill. When it does release it is very squeaky and since Im applying alot if power it will release and shake the whole truck when the hitch moves back. Is there a fix for this.

Thanks for reaching out to us, Brandan!

There are definitely a few things you'll want to check with the operation of your B&W Companion Slider # BWRVK3400. You'll want to make sure that the sliding rails are in good condition, that you have 20% of the weight of your 5th wheel on the pin (or tongue), and lastly that the latch for the sliding feature is operating properly.

Since you said you are usually going uphill what I recommend doing is trying to maneuver your truck and trailer on level ground to see if this still happens or if it's only when you're going uphill.

Let me know what you find and I can help you troubleshoot further.

Hey Brandan, what happened when you tried moving the truck and trailer on level ground with your B&W Companion Slider? Once you know if the stiffness only happens on a slope, I can help you narrow down the cause. Let me know what you find so we can sort it out.
