Questions About Turning Clearance With Curt CrossWing On 2025 GMC 3500 AT4

Published 10/25/2024

Question:

Truck is 2025 GMC 3500 AT4 with the OEM 5th wheel prep puck system. 6 foot 10 inch bed. Ordered a Brinkley Model Z 3610 which is 8ft wide. Would like to use the curt Crosswing if able to make it easily removable, keep the weight down and I like the coupling system. With the adapter rail it looks like Ill have 5 inches of offset. Will this give me enough clearance for tight turns? Looks like I have 46.5 inches from the rear window to the center hole of the oem puck system. The follow up is it looks like the Brinkley may now come with the new Curt Helux pin box. Curt said they dont recommend the Crosswing with that pin box. So am I stuck with a heavy slider? If so what would be the best option that would be the lightest in overall weight? Trying to figure out if I should just have brinkley install the older style pin box so I can use the Crosswing. Thanks so very much!

Hey thanks for reaching out, Craig. We do not have any information stating that the Curt Crosswing cannot be used with the Curt Helux pin box, but if Curt specifically told you not to, then I would have to take their word for it. So unless you can get them to put a different pin box on your 5th wheel, we will need to go in a different direction for the 5th wheel hitch. There are other slider hitches available, but they are going to be considerably heavier than the Crosswing.

For example the Curt Q25 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ R24 Slider # C79PV weighs about 250 lbs and this would be the lightest option available. Or The Demco Hijacker Auto Slide # DM29GV weighs over 320 lbs altogether. The Demco is a very solid hitch and the auto sliding feature is a major convenience but they are quite heavy. Any slider would easily allow for clearance on sharp turns.

If you want to calculate your clearance with the Crosswing hitch you can use the following formula:

(A + B) - C = Clearance
A = Distance from the fifth wheel jaw center to the truck cab
B = Offset used (slider clearance or Sidewinder offset)
C = Width of the nose of the trailer divided by 2

Based on the info you provided yours would be (46.5+5) - 48 = 3.5 so it sounds like you would have enough clearance with the Crosswing. So if you can get them to do a different pin box this would be a really good option for a lightweight hitch.

Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions or if you need anything else.

Thanks for the reply. So found out Brinkley actually offers the Gen Y gooseneck as an option on new trailers so I changed the order to one. WIth the GoosePuck 5" Offset Ball Puck System it actually solves all my problems. Gives me the offset I need, super easy to remove and only like 40lbs. I hope that information helps some one else. I can use the truck like a truck and not have to deal with a 200 plus pound 5th wheel.

@CraigF Ok great! Personally I love the Gen-Y gooseneck pin boxes so that is a great choice. I am glad to hear you were able to get everything sorted. Feel free to come back anytime you need anything!
