Recommended Upgrade For 185/80D13 Trailer Tires That Had Blowout

Updated 09/10/2025 | Published 07/22/2024

Question:

Hi Etrailer helpers! I have a question So I had a blowout on my 8ft utility trailer. I am frustrated because I just Bought them hi run trailer tires. My tire size is 175/80d13 I am looking for something better than them cheap China bombs unfortunately I got what I paid for them 80 dollars per tire at tractor supply. I am looking for something better and stronger. Than what I do have currently my Cousin told Me to suggest talking to you all about my problem. I am thankful no one got hurt due to the blowout on the interstate. I have been shook up about it ever since! I was loaded with my Zero turn Toro lawn mower on it when it went out. So I was wondering could I go with a bigger size like 185/80d13 instead of 175/80d13 so my tire options would be better. Any advice we would be greatly appreciated! Have a good day!

Hey Tyler,

I'm glad everyone was ok with the blowout and nothing serious happened, and to answer your question yes, you can go to 185/80-13 tires as they're just a bit larger than 175/80-13 tires. As for the right one, despite popular sentiment, the physical location the tires are made isn't the issue - as with anything else there's good and bad quality depending on what you get. You mentioned having cheaper tires, and another issue is your tires were bias tires (evidenced by the "D" in the 175/80D13).

Radial tires have cords that run side to side, which allows them to flex more, run cooler, and avoid blowouts. Bias tires are much stiffer and hold heat, resulting in more blowouts, particularly at higher speeds. So having said allllllll that (sorry that was a bit long-winded), what I recommend doing is going with the Kenda Karrier ST185/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10208.

These are high-quality, with a long 5-year warranty, an 81 mph speed rating, and 1,710 lb (per tire) load capacity. The # AM10208 is a tire I absolutely stand by, but so do our customers; there are some 6,000 reviews in and it's got a rating just under 5 out of 5, which is superb for any tire.

What is the age of these tires. Don't want them older than 6 month.

@Ruth We do a great job of constantly rotating our stock out so that tires sent out are no more than 6 months old. That is with every tire so for the # AM10208 you are wondering about it will be a fairly young tire no more than 6 months old.
