Wheel Size that Works with Yakima StageTwo Bike Rack

Question:

Ive been looking at the Yakima Stage 2, 2-bike and 4-bike options and Im confused. In the Tech. Specs. for the 2-bike configuration it shows that the rack is compatible with 20 - 29 inch wheel sizes, but in the 4-bike configuration it is 16 - 29 inches. Isnt the 4-bike option the 2-bike option plus a 2-bike add-on? Im asking because I need a rack that can accommodate 18 inch wheel sizes and carbon framed road bikes.

Hey Steve, so the tech specs for the Yakima StageTwo 2 bike rack part # Y87VR are correct and it can not fit with wheel diameters that are between 16-29 inches the smallest diameter wheel is 20 inch. Instead the only option that does fit that small of a wheel and is carbon frame friendly is the Kuat Piston Pro part # KU76ZR.

Hi Jameson, So, the 16-29 inch wheel size range listed for the 4-bike option in the tech specs is not correct? Ok, then what about the Kuat Transfer v2 with the 3 bike option. Will it hold an 18 inch wheel size bike and tilt down enough to open the rear hatch on a 2016 Highlander (with an adult size mountain or road bike nearest the hatch)? I think it is a wheel mount so it should be carbon friendly. Steve

@Steve Yes, I am going to send an update to fix that info. I should have mentioned that the Transfer 3 part # KU24FR is also 18 inch wheel compatible but I didn't even check that one although I checked all the other options. I just assumed it's wheel cradles wouldn't work. I don't think it will tilt enough to allow the rear hatch to open all the way though based on what we found when we installed this on a similar Highlander.
