Question:
I read your excellent write-up at https://www.etrailer.com/faq-Adding-Electric-Over-Hydraulic-Disc-Brakes.aspx but I was wondering if you could help me make sure Im choosing the right products before I make the purchase. I have a 2018 Trails West RPM 28 gooseneck trailer with tandem axles, with 6 lugs on each 15 wheel. The manufacturer of the trailer let me know that they are 5200/6000 torsion axles made by Henderson, but otherwise didnt have any more info. or specs. The VIN placard on the trailer lists GAWR at 5200 per axle. Id like to convert from the stock electric drum brakes to the hydraulic disc brakes, and also replace the bearings and seals while I am in there. Can you help me make sure Im choosing the right parts? If anything else needs to be identified or measured, just let me know.

Hey Brian, thanks for reaching out. I can definitely help with this. Here are the parts I recommend for converting your Henderson 5,200 lb axles over to electric-over-hydraulic brakes:
- Hydrastar Electric-Hydraulic Actuator w/ Line Kit for Disc Brakes - 1,600 psi # CAR-HBA16-2
- Bearing Kit for Trailer Brakes with 12" Hub/Rotor - 5,200 lbs to 6,000 lbs # DBRKHW6
- Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 12" Hub/Rotor - 6 on 5-1/2 - Dacromet - 5,200 lbs to 6,000 lbs # K2HR526D
A few things worth mentioning. The 5,200 lb axles almost always use the same standard bearing sizes, the # 25580 (1.750" inner diameter) inner bearing, and the # 15123 (1.25" inner diameter) outer bearing. We do not see Henderson brand axles very often, so I recommend that you pull one of the hubs and confirm these sizes for both bearings. While you are at it confirm the seal size which should be 2.250" ID and 3.376" OD.
Also, the Hydrastar Kit comes with a 15' long main brake line. Please do verify that this will be long enough to reach your axle. We can always get you a longer brake line, so if you need that just let me know.
You will also need an electric brake controller that is EOH compatible. Some OEM brake controllers are not OEH compatible. Virtually any aftermarket brake controller is EOH compatible, so if this is what you have, you will be good to go.
Keep in mind the disc brake kit and bearing kit is enough for one axle, so you will need to order two of each if you intend to put brakes on both axles. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions for me.
