Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes. Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Integral Hub-and-Rotor Assemblies

The integral hub-and-rotor is made from cast iron, matching SAE specifications. Cast iron is ideal for high-temperature operations and offers a favorable friction coefficient to ensure adequate stopping power. Kodiak's rotors are vented to effectively dissipate heat, dramatically reducing the incidence of heat-related damage. Furthermore, machined disc brakes minimize the chance of contamination between the hub and rotor, resulting in excellent performance and long life.

Calipers

Kodiak calipers are constructed of cast iron to prevent flexing. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with 5-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty ductile iron that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

Replaced old hubs and disc brakes on a 2012 Karavan Boat Trailer. Parts fit perfectly and installation was easy once I was able to get the old rusted bolts off, which was a challenge. The old bolts which held the mounting plate on were rusted and stripped. Finally used a Dremel to cut a slit in the bolts, then was able to use a screwdriver and hammer to slowly back them out. Wheels now look better than new! Thank you Jessica from etrailer for helping me with the parts I needed. I bought some extra parts just in case, and returns were a simple process also.

by:

Removed the drums on a 2015 Fifth Wheel that was used twice. It appears that the right side drums has a different installer as the grease seal was blown through with grease on the magnets, brake shoes, and inside the hub.
Removed all factory material and installed the e-trailer rotors with disc brakes and the installation was seamless. Looks better and provides excellent stopping power.
Remember just because it is new does not mean someone at the factory did not make a mistake. I had absolutely no brakes on this RV that weighed 12,100lbs loaded.
Thank you Ricky S. for the help and E-Trailer

Shortly after I had installed the brakes I became ill and sold theRV. I do want to let you know that the times I did use the RV the braking system performed very well. As a former State Trooper and accident reconstructionist, RVs that are the size that I had should all have these brakes. I am considering a smaller RV and will probably change the items that I had to change on the larger type. There is no price when it comes to safety.

Product was great & reasonable price

Sweet brake kit for an upgrade, replacing the old electric brake system!

by:

I used two of these to convert a two axle trailer from surge drum brakes to electric over hydraulic disc brakes. The improvement in braking can't be overstated! The difference is amazing. The installation was very straightforward with the instructions provided. If you have any mechanical aptitude you can handle this conversion.

by:

We do a lot of traveling in our 5th wheel rv all over the U.S. I bought this product because I don't particularly like the way the original electric brakes work. I installed them myself and the hardest part was routing the hydraulic lines, but it still didn't take much over one day. This past year we put about 10,000 miles on the rv and if it wasn't for the excellent stopping power of these brakes we probably would have had 2 accidents. One when the car in front of me missed his exit near Kansas city and decided to slam on his brakes and come to a stop in the middle of the freeway, and another time when out of nowhere a deer ran out in front of me on the interstate in New York. I love the brakes and will never be without disc brakes again!!!

by:

Very happy and these make a huge difference when towing by boat.

by:

The 4 replacement disc break sets plus bearings for my boat trailer were exactly as original, and customer service aided in my purchase. I didn't anticipate the corrosion on the wheels from salt water to rub the brackets slightly. Again customer service was great and advised how to remedy this problem. Great experience, and I have purchased other products from etrailer.com since.

by:

The Kodiac Disk brakes teamed with the Hydrastar Actuator should be a must for those towing with a concern for safety. The stopping distance is amazing compared to the standard electric surge braking systems. The initial cost outlay will pay for itself if it prevents an accident where deductibles are involved and the downtime. The complete installation of the system was actually quite easy if you are mechanically inclined and set aside the time to do it properly.

by:

Replaced tiedown drums with these on my trailer. (Make sure to puncture or remove the check value in the actuator - I removed mine. Thanks Randy B. for the advice.) The brakes themselves bolt on easy.

Wow, what a difference! It is clear the trailer is stopping itself now, and as proof, you cannot backup unless the pin is in. (Next mod is backup actuator.)

by:

After years of frustration with the standard drum brakes on my boat trailer I called William at etrailer. I ordered a disk brake conversion kit and new wheel bearings, The parts showed up 2 days earlier than I was expecting them allowing me to install them for the weekend. They look like quality items and I will gladly do business with Etrailer in the future. I'm satisfied with my purchase and I'm confident that I have a quality product.

by:

Hydraulic disc brakes are awesome! Braking is superior . I do not miss the electric drum brakes

Product looks great. It was shipped very quickly. I have ordered the second set as not to overload the UPS delivery person. I am already feeling confident that my RV will have the necessary braking power now.

by:

This kit works quite well, We use it in harsh conditions as a replacement for O.E. parts. This kit is a 1/3rd of the price of O.E. and last twice as long.

by:

Excellent. No comparison to the old electric drum system

by:

Quick and personal service - thank you for having a human being available for questions!

Will order from etrailer.com again!

Great service, quick shipping, and everything fit perfectly. Parts seem to be of high quality. Very happy thanks.

Based on the photo and information you provided, I can tell you have 12 x 2 inch Dexter brake assemblies for 5.2K axles, for which the Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-7-SA will be an excellent replacement. These are self-adjusting brakes so they do not require periodic manual adjustment like standard brakes. To replace the original brake mounting bolts, nuts and lockwashers, you can use # BRKH12.
