Question:
Hi, my husband and I are rebuilding a 1973 Cree Camper and the previous owner cut the brake line. We are wanting a little help determining what we’re going to need to replace that and probably replace the brakes. We’d like to keep the same hubs as it has really sweet looking wheels. Not sure if it’s possible to though. They are 4 stud wheels and that seems pretty unusual. Can you help? They are 8-147 Dexter on the hubs. It’s less than a 4,000 pound camper and the trailer itself says it’s rated for 5,000 lbs. they appear to be 3500 lb axels, but again, I don’t really know or I would be asking. We will want to buy new leaf springs and new suspension thingysyep that’s all I got for that one it looks like a saddle thing in between the leaf springs. I hope that made you chuckle. Any help is appreciated!

Hello Sarah, thanks for reaching out. Our records show the Dexter 8-147 hub is indeed for a 3,500 lb axle. So, we do have hubs that will fit your axle, like the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-545-35-G-K. The problem is these hubs use the standard 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. It appears your hubs use a 4 lug pattern which is unfortunately obsolete, so I do not have a solution I can offer that involves re-using your wheels. We do have some pretty cool looking wheels options that can work for you though, if that is something you are interested in. The brake assemblies should be the standard 10" x 2-1/4" brake shoe such as part # AKEBRK-35-SA.
If you want to replace the leaf springs, the best thing to do it jack up the trailer so you can measure the springs when not under a load. The new springs will need to be identical in size to the old springs, so if you can provide me with that measurement, I am happy to see what spring options we have for you. It sounds like you are wanting to replace the equalizer as well, in which case you will also need to measure the length and height of the current equalizer. Drop those measurements in the comments below and I am happy to make a recommendation. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions for me.
