Recommendation for Hitch, Wiring, and Brake Controller for 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT Quad Cab
Question:
Greetings! I just purchased a popup camper and now need to get my 2002 dodge ram 1500 SLT quad cab upgraded so it can tow it!!! I do not have the factory tow package or a hitch. The camper does have electric brakes too. What do I need? Thanks a bunch for your help and have a fantastic day!

Congrats on the purchase of your popup camper. Now lets get this truck ready to tow it.
I recommend the Curt Class III Receiver Hitch, # 13326, for your 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT Quad Cab. This hitch offers a 5,000 pound towing capacity with a tongue weight capacity of 500 pounds. To complete the towing package, add the Ball Mount Kit, # EBMK4. This kit includes the ball mount, 1-7/8 inch and 2 inch hitch balls, the pin and clip, and a nylon bag to store it all in.
Now for the vehicle wiring, you will need the Curt, # C55504, and the Universal Installation Kit for Brake Controllers, # ETBC7. This will establish a vehicle 7-way connection to control your camper signals and brakes.
As for a brake controller, the Tekonsha, # 90885, would be a great option. This proportional brake controller determines the tow vehicle's rate of deceleration and applies the trailer brakes to match for a much smoother braking response.
Since your vehicle does not have a factory tow package you will have to install the brake controller as a hard wire installation. You will do this by identifying and connecting to the appropriate wires on your pickup. A circuit tester like # PTW2993, will come in handy for this step.
I have attached a couple videos and articles, including ones on wiring and brake controllers on vehicles without a factory tow package, which may be of help to you. Happy Camping!
