Will My Converter/Charger Work With A 100ah AGM Battery?

Updated 11/13/2025 | Published 04/10/2024

Question:

I plan on switching to an AGM 100ah battery. Do converter / chargers handle AGM which require slightly higher voltage? I see where some claim to switch between lead and lithium, but I need to know about AGM.

Hello Kg. Most all of the converter/chargers out there will be compatible with AGM batteries. Although each unit will have its own list of compatible battery types. For example, the Progressive Dynamics 4000 Series RV Converter w/ Charge Wizard and AC/DC Distribution Panel - 60 Amp # PD4060K that you were looking at is compatible with lithium-ion, flooded lead acid, AGM, and gel batteries. If you can tell me exactly what model converter charger you have, I can tell you if it will work with AGM batteries or not. In all likelihood, it will.

Most units will work with flooded lead acid, AGM, and gel batteries which all use similar charging profiles. Lithium batteries require a different charging profile, and not all converter/chargers are compatible with lithium batteries. Some have a switch to change to lithium mode like you mentioned. Others are made to be lithium compatible and do not require a switch. Other (mostly older) units are not lithium compatible at all. It really just depends on what model you have and how old it is.

@JesseM Hi Jesse, I have a 2007 Bigfoot truck camper with a Parallax Power Systems 45 Amp 7300 series, Model 7345 Converter. Will this converter charge AGM batteries acceptability? It seems to be putting out about 13.5 volts while plugged into shorepower. Thanks in advance. Joel

Jesse ~ Thank you for previous answers to your customers. I have a (2013 ?) Schumacher Mity-Mite RVCDP55 Converter / Charger installed in a 2013 MB Sprinter Winnebago View Profile. I can find no data or manuals for this unit, and Winnebago only issued it for one year (I believe) and has no docs for it available. Questions: - Will this RVCDP55 safely charge a two new AGM batteries ? - Is this RVCDP55 a multi-stage charger ? (Good for AGM ?) - If yes on above, do you know where I can find a manual for this unit ? I use and appreciate all things E-Trailer, and will continue to be a customer. Thank you for any assistance. James

@James Hey James, thanks for reaching out. I wish I had better news for you here, but I also was not able to find much specific information about this RVCDP55 converter. I did find one source suggesting it is a single stage charger, but I did not find anything that confirms compatibility with AGM batteries. I did find a few forums online where people talk about needing to replace the RVCDP55 unit because their AGM bank was not charging properly. You could try checking what voltage what voltage the RVCDP55 puts out in its current configuration. If it’s at a lower “standard” voltage designed for flooded lead acid batteries, it may undercharge AGMs. In this case your best bet would be to replace it with a newer unit.

@JesseM - Thank you for your timely reply, much appreciated ! I kept looking and found pretty much the same: Do not risk new AGM batteries to an unknown and possibly incompatible charger. There was a by-pass option of adding a unit that will make the RVCDP55 a Four Stage charger. I'm studying that process now. Thank you Bud, James

@James Yea I agree adding a new unit would be the best option here. Either upgrade the old one, or replace it entirely. Let me know if anything else comes up! I am happy to help anytime you need anything!
