Adding 5-Way Flat Connectors to Trailer and Vehicle to Use Electric Reverse Lockout

Updated 04/21/2014 | Published 04/19/2014

Question:

My trailer currently has Titan surge drum brakes and Im considering switching to disc brakes, since the system is old and I need replacement master cylinder, brake cylinders and shoes, and bearings anyway. One question, how is the electric reverse lockout wired in? My system now has a flat 4-pole electric connection to the vehicle.

The electric reverse lockout included with Titan disc brake kit # T4748800 requires at least a 5-Way flat on the trailer and vehicle. The lockout solenoid gets power from the reverse light circuit from the vehicle. When the vehicle is placed in reverse it powers the solenoid and does not allow fluid to go back to the trailer brakes.

It is actually easy to add a 5-Way flat to the vehicle and the trailer. On the trailer side, you just need to cut off the 4-Way and install a 5-Way flat in its place. You could use # HM47910. Or for both the vehicle side and trailer side use # HM47890.

For a vehicle side only use # HM47900.

Then you would just need to wire the 5th wire to the reverse light wire behind one of the tail lights on the vehicle.
