Features to know about

Built for RVs and Rough Roads

Most manuals have a line that says it's not for use on trailers, which is not what you want to read after you already bought the rack. The Escapee Pro is rated for RV and trailer use, so you can carry your bikes behind your rig without ignoring the fine print.

Lock Your Bikes to the Rack and the Rack to Your Hitch

Locking ratchet hooks help keep your bikes secured to the rack, and the locking threaded hitch pin helps keep the rack secured to your receiver. There's also an anchor point on the drawbar for a Swagman hardened steel security chain and U lock (sold separately), so you are not guessing where to attach it.

Expand to 4 Bikes Without Replacing Your Rack

If you usually ride as a pair but sometimes travel with friends or family, the Escapee Pro can grow with you. Add the Escapee Pro Add-On (S25SR - sold separately) to expand your rack to carry up to 4 bikes.

When Your Bikes Are Heavy, Add a Ramp

Swagman ramp and bridge for Swagman Escapee.

Swagman lists the Escapee as RV approved for use on motorhomes and travel trailers. When used in RV mode, the per-bike rating drops to 70 lbs, which is worth knowing if your e-bikes are right near the top end.

Video Transcript for Swagman Escapee Pro Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes Review - 2025 Mazda CX-5 - S85SR

Hi, Matt with etrailer. Today we'll gonna be talking about the Swagman Escapee Pro Bike Rack on our 2025 Mazda CX-5. Now this will be a great option if you're looking for something that's gonna feel pretty good, it's gonna have a fairly large weight capacity and it's gonna look nice on the back of your vehicle. So where I wanna begin is how's interacting with it right now. So right now, if you're on a really bumpy road, we're still not gonna be making any contact with the back of our vehicle, even on those bumpier roads. And what's really nice is if we want hatch access, I can tilt this back.

The way I'll do that is right over here, we're gonna have this locking handle piece. I'll just lift up on that, pull this trigger down here and this will tilt away. That's a pretty aggressive tilt. I like that because that's gonna give us plenty of room to get back here. So if you're out and about running some errands, you can throw some groceries, still leave your bike in place.

And if you wanna get ready for your ride, you can do that. You can tie your shoes, grab your helmet, and if you decide to go with the ramp that comes separately, you can grab that now, that can kind of show you how that works. So first, let me put this back up. I will say it is a little bit of a heavier rack, and if you have heavier bikes on here, this will be a little bit of a lift. So this is gonna have your weight capacity of 80 pounds per bike.

And if you're putting this on an RV, that's gonna drop two 70 pounds. So that's gonna accommodate a lot of heavy e-bikes. Now the way we're gonna take it off is by removing the strap on the backside and then removing that front hook. Now before we remove that front hook, I'm gonna put this ramp on. And the way this works is it's gonna go on one side.

I'm gonna do it on this front cradle here. Reason being, I can't take off my bike from this side. This is a perfect example, if you're in a parking lot and there's a car blocking this side of you, you can just move it over to this tray here. That was just lined up with these tabs. It looks like that. Oh, let me flip it around. There we go. Once you have it all lined up, then we'll grab the ramp itself, have some more additional tabs, have hand knobs on it, so you can adjust this just like that. Depending on the height of the vehicle and your location, just make sure you're tightening it back down on both of them so they don't go anywhere. And then I can remove that front hook here. All you have to do is squeeze on this handle for release, drop down. Now what I'll typically do is just pull over to this tray here and just roll it off and then I can take my bike out for a ride. Now a few things to say with these cradles are they're gonna be very large, so they will accommodate a wide range of vehicles. And when it comes to putting everything back up, doesn't really take too long, especially since it's cradle on the front side or this hook I should say. You can just push down on this, it ratchets it in place. Of course, once you get everything put up, then you can start going out on the ride again. Before I do any of that though, lemme get a couple measurements. So I'm gonna put this ramp up and I'm gonna grab my tape measure. And the first measurement I'm gonna get is gonna be the overall length it sits out. So right now, this is sitting just a little bit over 33 inches. That's pretty standard for a two bike rack. Now for the total ground clearance we're gonna have, this is gonna be about 16 inches. So if you have any heavier bikes on here, that's gonna drop down by a couple inches. So definitely keep that in mind if you're going up any steep inclines, like a driveway or a parking lot or a hill. Now we can fold it up, make sure these are pushed all the way down so we don't make contact with the back of our vehicle. Push it up. We'll make sure I put that locking handle back into place just so nothing bumps it and it comes down. And now we are gonna be sitting at about 14 and 1/2 inches. So that's pretty good. That's gonna save us a lot of space, especially in those tight spots like a parking spot or garage. Now the way it's sitting on here right now, it will block a few things. So our license plate will be blocked and a majority of our backup camera. So what I would recommend doing is just mainly using your back window since that's not gonna be blocked or your mirrors, and our lights are not gonna be blocked at all. And the way it's gonna install is we'll have a two inch shank that goes into our two inch hitch receiver. We'll have an anti-rattle bolt that goes through here, and will connect to the other side with a lock core. So it'll have the extra security. You also have this collar here. You can adjust this, tighten it down. And this will be an alignment collar, so you don't have to worry about lining up that pinhole every time you install this. So it makes it a little bit easier in the future. So overall, I do think this is gonna be a pretty solid option for most people either who do want a rack that's gonna be RV-compatible and can carry those heavier bikes. And if you guys do decide to go with this, let us know how it's working for you in either comment or review. And if you have any other questions, let us know here at etrailer. And again, I'm Matt, and thanks for watching.

  • Will Swagman Escapee Pro Work With Front Fenders and Will Swagman E-Spec Pro Fit Step-Through
Hey Sam! The Swagman Escapee Pro # S85SR will work with a step-through frame since it secures the bikes by the front tires. However, it is for that reason that this won't work with front fenders. The Swagman E-Spec Pro # S45SR will likely require an adapter bar # S57FR to secure an e-bike with a step-through frame. If you're looking for something that is RV compatible and won't require the adapter bar I recommend the Hollywood Racks RV Rider Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes # HLY64FR. This...
