Understanding Max Weight Rating for Aftermarket Hitch on 2024 Honda CR-V

Question:

Hi, Im confused about the approved tongue weight for these aftermarket hitches. This one shows 525 lbs however, the 2024 CRV Sport Manual shows, Maximum allowable weight of the trailer, cargo, and everything in or on it must not exceed 1,000 lbs 450 kg,inch and The weight of the tongue with a fully loaded trailer on the hitch should be approximately 10 of the total trailer weight. There is no mention of the type of hitch within the manual, and I know the OEM hitch is rated lower. What is correct to use for how much weight can be safely stored? Note our use case will be a hitch cargo carrier. Do I use the manual guidelines or the hitch guidelines? Thanks!

The 525 lb max tongue weight and 3,500 lb max gross trailer weight rating is what the # e98848 is capable of. Many aftermarket Class III hitches are able to handle more weight than the vehicle they are designed for. Occasionally the towing capacity of the vehicle exceeds the capacity of the hitch. Whatever the case may be, you are always limited by the lower capacity. In this case, you are limited by the weight capacity listed in your 2024 Honda CR-V owner's manual.
