Replacing Hubs And Brakes On A Dual Axle Enclosed 8x16 Trailer

Published 02/01/2024

Question:

Hi I have a dual axle enclosed 8x16 trailer. I want to replace hubs and basically the brakes. The brakes have been disconnected for years and I do not need them. Do I have to purchase something that will fill the void where the brakes are or just buy the hub and it will fit regardless if brake drums etc are missing? Thank you

Hey Patrick thanks for your question. If you want to do away with the brakes on your 8x16 dual axle trailer, you can simply remove the current hub/drums and the brake assemblies, and you can install idler hubs. There is nothing needed beyond that to fill any void. It will just be a process of swapping out the braking hubs for idler hubs.

The Easy Grease Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # AKIHUB-545-35-G-EZ-K that you were looking at is made for a 3,500 lb axle and uses the standard # L68149 (1.378" inner diameter) inner bearing and # L44649 (1.063" inner diameter) outer bearing. It also uses the standard 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. I am not sure exactly what axles are on your trailer now, but if they are the 3,500 lb axles, a few of the # AKIHUB-545-35-G-EZ-K idler hubs are exactly what you will need.

If you do happen to have a different axle size feel free to send me that info and I am happy to make a recommendation. You will also need some bearing grease and for that I recommend the LubriMatic Prime Guard High Temperature Wheel Bearing Grease # L11380.
