Recommendation For Adding Weight Distribution and Sway Controll To Trailer With 12" X 5-1/4" I-Beams

Published 11/27/2023

Question:

We had a specialty trailer built with I-beam frame 12 high by 5 1/4 wide. Trailer is 11k. Is there a weight distribution/sway control that would mount to something like this? I can provide pictures. Thank you

I have a couple options for you to consider since no one makes a weight distribution hitch with sway control that is going to bolt around your 12" x 5-1/4" I beam frame. You can consider modifying the sway brackets on the Blue Ox SwayPro # BXW1500. You would have to cut off the drop portion with the tension bolt and instead drill holes through the brackets and the top of your frame to bolt the assembly to the frame.

A better option would be to add an Electronic Sway # 335TSC-1000 to your trailer and a air bag suspension to your tow vehicle. The electronic sway will send brake power to either the left or right side trailer brakes to help correct sway when it begins. You will then be able to better level your tow vehicle using the air bag. If you can tell me what truck you have I can show you your options. Best of all since these items are installed on your vehicle and trailer the connection process is much simpler since you do not have all the components of the weight distribution hitch. You are also not adding all the additional weight these heavy systems can weigh.
