Replacement 215/75-14 Trailer Tires for a Dual Axle Boat Trailer

Updated 04/09/2014 | Published 04/08/2014

Question:

Hello, I am looking to replace my boat trailer tires. The boat and trailer weigh approximately 5400 lbs combined. The trailer is dual axle with surge brakes on one axle. The boat is a 23 foot deep-V center console. I tow with a 2010 Ford F-150 5.4L. Most of my driving includes high speed highway at 65 to 75 mph. My current tires are 215 75 14, 8 years old, not too worn 6000 miles, but have some sidewall dryness as well as in between the treads to the point that they now need frequent re-filling of air. I see both radial and bias ply tires offered. What would you recommend for my application? I am looking for safe smooth driving and long life.

Radial trailer tires are going to give you the best ride and they run cooler than bias ply tires so I recommend going with radials. For tire size 215/75-14 you would need radial tire # AM10229. It is rated for 1,870 pounds at 50 psi so 4 of them would have more than enough capacity for a 5,400 pound gross trailer weight.

Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi as indicated on the tire. The reason for this is that trailer tires have a thicker side wall than car tires. If under inflated the thicker side wall will lead to excessive heat and tire failure.

The trailer tires we carry are rated for 65 miles per hour. Most other trailer tires I have seen are rated for slower speeds. Exceeding 65 miles per hour will also generate excessive heat. I have included a link to our help article on trailer tires for you.
