Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Ordering was simple and my tires arrived a day early etrailer is right on the ball!!!

The Kendras are awesome best purchase Ive ever made!!!
dave - 12/02/2022

A very good quality tire and rim assembly and a great price. Very convenient buying as a set.

Great service, tires arrived quickly and were new date codes.

Website was very user friendly and shipping was on time. I’m definitely will buy my trailer tires here again. Had zero issues,Thanks guys!

We could not be happier with this purchase and transaction. The prices were quite reasonable, for this market & product, and the free-shipping saved us nearly $200. They got here faster than expected at 10 days, each tire & rim assembly were boxed separately and arrived undamaged - see pictures. I will now have to have them balanced, as I see no balancing weights on the rims, which was expected. We also ordered a spare, which was to be delivered late, but it arrived with the shipment too. Very good! 5-star is well deserved. Thank you!

This was the 2nd boat trailer tire we have ordered from The first time I searched locally for the needed tire with no results. A tire dealer actually told me about I immediately found the tire I needed both times. I was able to track the tire from the time “it rolled out” until it was delivered. Great service and beyond prompt.

Thank you Alex for making sure I received my order very quickly

Order process was easy and shipping was super fast! Will definitely use again in the future!

All I can say is Wow!!! Despite my better judgment, I had initially purchased trailer tires from another source online last week. They were delivered with no protection and all 3 were damaged from shipping and had to be thrown away. They were also 4 year old date codes!!! I decided to look at etrailer as I had bought items from them in the past. My tires arrived in three days and each one was perfect condition and in separate boxes. Also the date codes are only a few months old so these tires are as fresh as I can get. Thank you for saving the day!!!

This was exactly what we were looking for, identical to the one we are replacing. Received in good packaging & did not have to wait long.

Just put these tires on my Ranger dual axle trailer and they appear to be a quality tire and the etrailer customer team did an outstanding job processing my order and keeping me informed of the delivery tracking status. Great customer service!

Shockingly fast delivery. Tire was perfect. Couldnt ask for more.

Tires working as expected. Thousands of miles logged. No issues

The price, tire quality and delivery was excellent. Salesman was very knowledgeable on Boat Trailer tires.

Great. It helped me sell my boat.
William K - 05/26/2016

Trailer tires got here several days earlier than original shipping estimate. Pleasantly surprised!

First of all, you had the tire we were looking for. I looked at least 20 other places (locally and online). I did contact one local national tire store and they said they could order the tire and I would have it the next day. Two weeks later, I am still waiting for their phone call. I did pay extra for the 4 to 6 day delivery and got it in 3 days. It is perfect. Was notified by email that it ordered, shipped and delivered.

Only place I could find a replacement tire without a wheel.

Order was easy, unfortunately item was not in stock. Email sent to me , earliest expected ship date would be 11 days from ordered date. Received item (load star tire) 6 days after order placed, well before expected ship date given. Thanks

I was concerned buying tires on line, but was very pleased with the result.
Shipping was very fast considering cross border delivery, and tires are fantastic and great quality.

etrailer not only met my expectaions, they exceeded them!! job well done to all

Exact match to replace to replace my stock tires on my trailer. Great products and great service.

Replaced an original tire but haven't had the chance to tow with it. Product came quickly and what was I ordered.

Tire came in a nice neat box, shipping cost was minimal, I'm very happy with prod.

Product arrived in 2 days. Tires were exactly what I needed and have used them in the past. Excellent tire. I’ve put a ton of miles on these tires without an issue.

Great tire no issues after 5K miles

Quick and easy purchase and delivery. Thanks!

For optimal performance, long life and to realize their maximum load bearing capability, trailer tires should always remain inflated to the maximum pressure rating listed on the tire sidewall, which in the case of the Karrier ST215/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire, # AM10229 is 50 psi. I will link you to our Trailer Tire FAQ article that contains other information that you might find helpful.

  • At What Age Should Trailer Tires be Replaced
As a general rule of thumb, trailer tires should be replaced every 6 to 8 years regardless of wear. Even though an older tire might appear to have plenty of tread left on it, dry rot and cracking can cause tire failure. I attached a link to a help article that has more trailer tire info as well.

According to my research the smallest wheel size compatible with 225/75 tires is 15". This means that the 215/75R14 size tires are what you are needing. For this tire size I recommend the Karrier ST215/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range C Item # AM10229 Attached is a review video that you can check out.

  • Recommended Replacement 215/75R14 Tires on Boat Trailer
I recommend using the Kenda Karrier ST215/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10229. The Karrier is rated for 1,870 lbs at 50 psi (which means 7,480 lbs for 4 tires). This will not quite be enough for your 7500. We need to go up to a higher load range. I would suggest the slightly smaller tire with a higher load range in the Goodyear Endurance ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D Item # 724864519. This tire has a capacity of 2,040 lbs at 65 psi and a max speed rating of 87 mph...

  • Upgrading Trailer Tire on 14 inch Wheel to Biggest Size Available
The largest trailer tire for a 14 inch rim is the size 215/75-14 which is only .4 inches taller overall than the other size that this size wheel will have of 205/75-14 which is what you probably have so it would easily fit without issue. For that size we have the Kenda Karrier part # AM10229. it has a weight capacity of 1,870 max load at 50 psi, a speed rating of 81 mph and a 1-year warranty. Check out the review video I attached for more info as well.

  • Switching From a 215/70R14 To a 215/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire
You can change to a slightly larger tire like the Karrier ST215/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10229 as long as you have adequate clearance to fit the larger tire. The new tire is going to be 3/4" taller overall. This will account to 3/8" taller in your fender area. A good rule is to use 3" for adequate clearance and to allow your suspension to articulate. There will be no difference in the width compared to your current tire. Be sure to also verify that you have the correct load rating...

I do have a solution for replacement tires, but unfortunately we do not have any whitewall tires available. I recommend the Karrier ST215/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10229. This will be slightly smaller when compared to your current tires, but will fit your 14" wheels. It has an outer diameter of 26.8" and section width of 8.5". This tire has a maximum load of 1,870 lbs at 50 psi with a load range C. It looks like your current tires have a capacity of 1,770 lbs so that should work well....

  • Can Radial Load Range C Trailer Tires be Used in Place of Bias Ply Load Range D 215/75-14 Tires
First, you do want to make sure the tires are the same type, radial or bias ply. But in the case of a spare, since it is a temporary situation you can mix them as long as you get the tire repaired or replaced as soon as possible. As far as going to a 215/75R14 radial tire, load range C, like # AM10229, as long as the 1,870 pound capacity at 50 psi is enough (total of 3,740 pounds for one axle) then you can absolutely switch to radials. Since the highest load range we offer for the 215/75R14 tire size is Load Range C the best option would be to go with a Load Range D 205/75R14 like # AM10235. This tire has a capacity of 2,040 lbs when inflated to 65 psi. You will want to determine what the weight of your trailer to be certain this tire would have enough capacity. • Is Tire Weight Capacity Listed per Tire or Per Axle
It would seem that the 1,750 rating that your tire has is the weight rating, but most ST205/75-14 tires with a Load Range of C have a 1,870 lb capacity at 50 psi like part # AM10229. That would mean that when you combine the two tires you have an overall tire rating of 3,500 lbs. I attached a help article on trailer tires for you to check out as well.

  • Can an ST205/75-14 Trailer Tire Get Replaced by a ST215/75-14
Yes, you would be totally fine to go from a ST205-75-14 tire to a ST215-75-14. The size difference will be so small that you wouldn't hardly see any difference. As long as your current wheels have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern the part # AM10229 for the tires and part number #AM20352 would work very well. These would need mounted at your local shop, they are not sold pre-mounted. I attached a help article on determining bolt patterns for you to check out as well.

The ST215/75R14 tire size is larger in diameter/height by just about 0.6 inches and larger in width by about 0.4 inches when compared to your existing ST205/75R14 tires. The 205/75-14 tire has a 26.14" diameter and 7.99" section width while the 215/75-14 has a 26.8" diameter and 8.5" section width. Since the difference is about 1/4" you should be just fine. The 215/75-14 tire only comes in a load range C in part # AM10229 which has a section width of 8.5 inches and a slightly larger diameter of 26.8 inches, However, since we had to go down to a Load Range C, it has as a lower 1870 lb per tire load...

Yes, you can replace your ST205/75R15 tires with ST215/75R14 tires like the Karrier # AM10229. The 14" tire will be 1" - 1-1/2" smaller in terms of diameter and about 1/2" wider. This means you will lose about 1/2" in height and gain the same on top for clearance. On the inside of the tire you will lose about 1/4" of clearance but that shouldn't be a problem. If you need a wheel and tire combo you can use the # AM32181.

  • Can Radial and Bias Tire Types be Used Simultaneously on a Boat Trailer
We do not advise mixing bias ply and radial ply tires on any vehicle. Each type of tire has a unique cord construction under the tread layer that gives each one different ride characteristics. Bias tires use cords that run on a 32 degree angle to the direction of rotation. Radial tires use cords that run on a 90-degree angle to the direction of rotation. Using a Bias ST215/75D14, like part # AM1ST90, and Radial ST215/75R14, like part # AM10229, tire at the same time on your trailer should only be done if there were an emergency. Since there is a difference in how those types of tires run, wear, and cool, you could end up having an uneven ride or tire failure. The ideal setup is to have all bias tires or all radial tires. That is the best way to stay safe and know that you will get the most life out of each tire.
