Question:
What tires are better 4.80 or the 5.30 trailer tires
asked by: Jeffrey
Expert Reply:
The 5.30-12 tires will have higher ratings than the 4.80-12 tires so in a sense they are "better", but it's really just relative to your trailer situation since having a tire that's rated significantly higher than your trailer weight can actually cause the trailer to "bounce" and have more of a rough ride. The best thing to do is choose your tire based off of the size that your trailer originally came with and then check the weight rating and get something that's rated a little over the GVWR of your trailer so you aren't max-ing out the tires.
For example, the Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire - 4.80-12 # AM10060 is a Load Range B (785 lbs at 60 psi) while the Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire - 5.30-12 # AM10068 is a Load Range D (1,250 lbs at 105 psi). These are the lowest and highest ratings for these tires but it just gives you a full picture of what is out there.
If you let me know the tire size and Load Range of your current tires as well as the GVWR of your trailer I'd be more than happy to make a recommendation for you!
