Lug Nut For 1/2 Inch Trailer Wheel Bolt

Updated 09/05/2023 | Published 09/02/2023

Question:

I recently bought a two axle auxiliary trailer. It is homemade. I need lug nuts for all four wheels as some are missing. The front axle is not as big as the rear. The front has 6 lugs and the rear has 5 lugs. The rear left hub is a left hand thread the others all right hand thread. all four hubs are missing some lug nuts. I thought Id go ahead and replace them all. I measured the bolts with calipers. The front axle lug bolt diameter is .420. The rear axle lug diameter is .490. What lug nuts should I use?

Expert Reply:

The only lug nut we have that may work is for the .490 right hand thread lug nut Lionshead Trailer Wheel Lug Nut - 1/2"-20 # LHLR103. That would only be if the wheel stud thread was 20 threads per inch.

You may consider replacing the wheel studs if you can, just make sure the replacement matches the length and knurl size of what you have. For example the Replacement Trailer Hub Wheel Stud, Drive-In, 1/2" x 2-3/4" # RG03-080 has is 2-3/4" with a .56" knurl.

I have added a link below to our wheel studs for you if you want to consider going this route.
