I recommend installing our etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e29AR on your 2008 Ford Ranger 4x4 with the 4.0L 6 cylinder engine. The frame mounted receiver may require the drilling of 2 additional holes as Ford did not drill these holes in every Ford ranger. There is also not a bolt on receiver for your bumper. I have linked the installation instructions below so you can see where the holes are ahead of time to determine if you will need to drill.
If you will need a 4-way flat connector for operating the lights on a small trailer, you will need to check and see if you have a USCAR # 20147 type connector located behind your bumper. If you do find this connector the Curt 4-Way # C55515 is all you will need for a plug and play connection. Otherwise you will need the Hopkins 4-Way # HM40655 to connect in line of your factory tail lights.
