Review of etrailer Trailer Brakes AKUBRK-35R

Today we're going to take a look at the 10" Uni-Servo hydraulic trailer brake assembly for 3500 pound axles. This is the right hand or passenger side assembly. This hydraulic drum brake assembly is designed for use with the surge type trailer brake actuators. This one is a Uni-Servo design, you can see it's a single plunger design. The reason they use the Uni-Servo design, it'll still deliver about 20% braking in reverse, it doesn't full lock up your brakes. The size on this is a 10" by 2-1/4" passenger side electric brake assembly.

This 10" and 2-1/4", when they say that size what they're telling you is the measurement, the 10" is the diameter of it. If we take a ruler, measure the diameter you can see there's the 10", and then the 2-1/4" is actually the width of the pad on the shoe. You can see 2-1/4", so 10" x 2-1/4", and this is the passenger side, or right hand side. Now all the new ones will come with a sticker that'll signify that, but if that sticker wasn't there, just a little tip, the easiest way to know what side this goes on is just look at the size of the shoe. If you see the pad on this shoe, the pad size is smaller compared to this one, it's a lot longer pad. The shoe that has the shorter pad on it will always face towards the front of the trailer.

With that if this is the shorter pad, that's the front of the trailer, that'll tell you that this is the right hand or passenger side assembly. Now these brake shoes are lined with an automotive grade friction material. This friction material's fully bonded to the shoe, it's not riveted. It gives you a lot longer life, more braking inaudible 00:01:30. The lining also has tapered edges on the ends, and then they do a circular grinding all along the material to prevent cracking and crumbling that can lead to mechanical lockup. This is a manually adjusted brake, so it does require periodic manual adjustments.

The adjustments are right here on this star wheel, and the nice things is, is they use a fine tooth gear on this star wheel that'll give you a more precise setting, and there is no brake in inaudible 00:01:54 need it when following your initial adjustment. When you go to adjust it, if you turn it over you'll see on the bottom here, there's two holes. They do have the plugs in it, and that's another nice feature on this assembly, is these plugs are included with the assembly. Some of them they don't include those plugs, they just leave the holes open, but you don't really want that. You do want a plug in there to keep any dirt from getting in and damaging your brake assembly.

Remove these plugs, put your adjustment tool or screwdriver in there, and then you just turn this star wheel to get your correct setting for your brakes. Now, the adjuster plugs are included. If you notice also, the mounting bolts are all included. Now the nuts and the lock washers that are used to install this, we do sell those separately and they are listed on this product page as a related product. It is designed to fit the four whole brake mounting flange. This backing plate is e-coated, so that'll help resist wear and corrosion. This whole assembly is certified by US SA standards and CSA, which is the Canadian standards. Again, the dimension on this is 10" x 2-1/4", fits an axle of 3500 pounds, and it is designed to use 10" drums. That should do it for the review of the 10" Uni-Servo hydraulic trailer brake assembly for 3500 pound axles, and this is the right hand or passenger side assembly.
