How to Replace a Hinge on a Thule Motion XT XXL w/ a Support Bar in the Way

Question:

my thule motion XT XXL has a bar across the front of the holder right in front of the bottom ball joint - it is impossible to get something directly behind the hinge I have 4 clamps of various sizes Is there a way to get this replaced? or other tips to provide force to pop the hinge into the ball socket?

Thanks for the picture! Yes, there is a way to get around this horrible design and replace the hinge on your Motion XT XXL. Thule is less than helpful with directions on their replacement parts but we have encountered this issue before.

To install the Lid Lifter item # 1401495600 you are going to want to heat the old one up with a heat gun or blow dryer. It's a ball joint so the warmer it is the more play you will get in it. Then you will want to pry at it from the opposite side of the support bar with something that looks like a miniature crowbar. There should be just enough room to get the hinge off of the ball joint and pop the new one in. Heating up the new one before popping it on that ball joint would make it more pliable.
