Can Upgraded Tires Be Installed on Malone MicroSport Trailer To Increase Speed Rating?

Updated 06/15/2026 | Published 07/13/2023

Question:

If I upgrade the tires for a malone microsport carrying 2 fishing kayaks will I be able to exceed the 65mph rating? I need to go closer to 75mph to keep up with traffic. My typical fishing trip is between 50 and 70 miles each way, mostly highway driving. If higher speed rated tires isnt enough can you offer any other upgrade suggestions to the current trailer?

Yes, by installing 2 of the Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tires # TT48012C on your Malone MicroSport Trailer # MPG461B2 you will be able to drive faster on the road. These tires are speed rated up to 81mph so you will not be limited to the speed of the current tires 65mph speed rating you have.

We also have a Steel Spoke Trailer Wheel # AM20134 you can combine with the Taskmaster # TT48012C tire to have a spare wheel and tire in the event of a flat.

If you ask Malone, they will tell you that the hubs also limit you to 65mph. I'm not sure who to believe but I upgraded my tires so far.

@Mark2 You are only as strong as you weakest (or in this case slowest) component, 65 MPH on their hubs is new information to me. But if Malone told you 65, then you should only not go over 65.

@KateF Thanks Kate, yeah all over the internet I see people saying 70-75mph is fine for a Microsport trailer w/ upgraded tires. Might be good to have a replacement hub assembly on hand.

@Mark2 My pleasure Mark. Always a good idea do to have a back up hub on hand. The Malone Microsport uses a BT8 spindle, so you will want the Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 2,000-lb Axles - 5 on 4-1/2 # 34822545BX.
