Question:

I have a 2002 Gmc Sierra 2500 HD with a Royal 8 ft utility bed. What hitch will work with my truck? the frame is 3ft 3 inches on center and the bumper is 5 inches lower than the frame rails.

Since you are looking for a heavy-duty trailer hitch, you may be able to use the Curt Class V XD Trailer Hitch, # C15313. This hitch was designed to fit the 2002 GMC Sierra 2500 HD pickup trucks with a frame width of 39 inches. The receiver will sit 5-1/2 inches below the frame, so it should also clear your bumper.

I have attached a diagram showing different measurements of this hitch for you to check out. If your truck came with the utility bed from the factory, you may want to check your frame to make sure you have the pre-drilled holes for a trailer hitch. If not, you can use the bolt holes from the hitch as a template to drill new holes.

If you also need a trailer wiring harness and your truck has the factory GM trailer wiring at the back of the truck, you could use the Hopkins 7- and 4-Pole Trailer Connector Socket, # HM40975, with the Pollak Wiring Harness, # PK11998. If your truck has the factory tow package wiring present, you will see a round connect that mates with the round connector on the back side of this connector. I have attached a video that shows where the factory wiring can be found on a 2002 Silverado, which will be the same for a Sierra.

Almost all GM pickup trucks came with the factory trailer wiring, but if your truck came with the utility bed on it, then there is a possibility the factory tow package wiring was not completed. To install a trailer wiring harness, you will want to use the Tow Ready Heavy-Duty Modulite Wiring Harness, # C59496. Most of the Royal utility beds that I have seen use separate tail light wiring, meaning there are separate bulbs for the brake light and turn signal. This Modulite will convert the separate tail light wiring down to combined which is what trailers use. This harness will provide you with a 4-way trailer connector.

To add a 7-way trailer connector, you can use the Universal 7-Way and 4-Way Installation Kit, # ETBC7. This kit includes all of the parts and hardware necessary to have a fully functioning 7-way trailer connector. The only additional component you may need is an brake controller like the Prodigy P2, # 90885, if the trailer you plan on towing has electric brakes.
