Fit of Draw-Tite Class III Hitch # 41938 on 2003 GMC Cab/Chassis with Service Body

Published 07/10/2013

Question:

I need to install a hitch on a 2003 GMC Sierra 3500 dually with a 108 inch Reading service body. My question is does the hitch bolt into the bottom of the frame rail my service body mounts bolt into the side and will it be long enough to reach out the back of the body. I did order the bed with a bumper that is inset where the ball would be.

It is very difficult to provide a definite yes or no answer about hitch fit when a service body is involved.

I can provide you with some measurements and parameters that would allow you to take some measurements from your truck and determine if the hitch will fit.

First of all, your frame must measure 34 inches, outside to outside distance. If you measure from the rear of the frame member toward the front of the vehicle, you must have at least 19 inches of open and unobstructed frame rail (underside) for the hitch to fit.

To ensure that the hitch will clear the rear bumper, there are two additional measurements you would need to take. The hitch you referenced, part # 41938 has a 5-1/2 inch drop, measured from the bottom of the frame to the top of the receiver tube. The face of the receiver opening extends 11-5/8 inches rearward from the rear-most attachment hole in the frame member (see photo). In other words, if you measure down 5-1/2 from the frame member, and from that point, 11-5/8 inches rearward and the rear bumper does NOT interfere, the hitch will fit your truck. If it will not fit, your best bet would be to either contact Reading or have a certified welder fabricate something for you.
