Weight Capacity of the Yakima OutPost HD Overland Truck Bed Ladder Rack

Updated 10/07/2025 | Published 07/01/2023

Question:

Hello, I would like to purchase the yakima overland HD rail system to install on my retrax xr cover. My question is based on load ratings. I saw 300lb on road, and 180 off road. Is the 300lb for while moving on like a freeway? My concern is a 180lb roof top tent with two adults stationary would be more than 300 pounds. Is there a stationary load rating?

Yes, there is and you will be good! I checked with Yakima and the Yakima OutPost HD Overland Truck Bed Ladder Rack item # Y01152-5755 has a weight capacity of 500 lbs on-road, 300 lbs off-road, and 800 lbs static or stationary. However, when you add the Tonneau Cover adapter, that this kit includes, it reduces the capacity to 300 lbs on-road and 180 lbs off-road but that is when the vehicle is moving. The stationary weight capacity will also be reduced by 40% so it will be 480 lbs.

Please note the maximum weight ratings will be reduced by 40% when using crossbar spreads less than 36".

Is there a rack system (perhaps by adding more cross bars,, over my retrax xr cover that can handle 2 dirt bikes that weigh about 225lbs each?

@Mike No, there's no combination of crossbars that's going to have that high of capacity. A ladder rack loses most of it's capacity when it's attached to a tonneau cover and even if you took the cover off and installed a traditional ladder rack there's no bike rack capable of handling that heavy of a bike.
