Wire Gauge of Fastway Zip Trailer Breakaway Switch
Published 06/23/2023 >
Question:
What are the guage of the electrical wires going in and out of this breakaway switch? I am wanting to add a 15 amp fuse and was wondering if the wires would support that amperage in the event of a short? I have a single axel two brakes trailer. It should trigger only 8 amps when activated. I would use a breaker with a visible red bar that flips sideways when tripped for easy visual inspection before each trip. One other question...When the emergency brakes deploy, is there an initial surge of amperage or is the rating of 4 amps a brake drum the max amps a brake drum will draw? Thank you

Expert Reply:
The wire is 16 gauge for the Fastway Zip Trailer Breakaway Switch with Coiled Cable # FA80-00-2060.
Sixteen gauge can handle a max 13 amps so you are good triggering the max 8 amps when activated. As for your other question, there is not an initial surge, the rating is 4 amps per brake magnet for 10 inch electric brakes.
