Question:

I am looking for a replacement for an Atwood G6A-8E water heater with 12.5inch H x 16inch W x 17inch D Can you recommend the proper replacement unit? Will the old door convert to the new unit?

Since Atwood is no longer in business and all newer water heater models have transitioned to a smaller cutout you're not going to be able to reuse your current door and will have to make modifications to the cutout hole in order to mount a new unit. Since everything will be covered by a new access door it doesn't have to be pretty but you will need to frame in a new space within your current cutout hole for a new unit to mount onto.

I recommend going with the Furrion RV Tankless Water Heater # FR98SR, which is 12-5/8" wide x 12-5/8" tall x 19-1/4" deep. This means that you'll need to mount two pieces of wood vertically for the mounting flange of the unit to have something to mount to on the sides. The access door for this unit is 16-1/8" x 16-1/8" in overall width and height. If you find the width of your door is a bit larger than you can size up to the # FR48SR for a the extra width (18-1/8") and ensure that it fully covers the opening.

These units have a 13,000 - 60,000 Btu heating capacity, capable of up to 144 gallons of hot water and hour. To put that in perspective the Atwood G6A-8E only has an 8,800 Btu rating. The water inlet/outlet and gas hookup are most likely also going to spaced differently so you may have to reroute your lines as well.

When mounting the unit and access door you'll want to use butyl tape # AL28FJ on the back of the mounting flanges and some non-sag sealant # 344270341437-1 around the outer edge of the access door for a waterproof seal.
